The reason for this is to simply make it possible for all gamers to join the Navy and reach the rank of Captain. And we do not charge the cost of them to the Navy. So yes, Sloop class ships magically appear. The Frigate Fleet would also be the best talent pool for selecting Captains suitable for the Squadrons. Frigates too have to be purchased by the Navy, but there is no size limitation on either the Unrated Fleet or the Frigate Fleet. Frigate Captains are not bound to Squadrons and have more freedom of operation, although they do need to operate on orders of the Admiralty Board. In between the Unrated Fleet and the Squadrons is the Frigate Fleet. Nothing smaller than a Corvette (5th Rate) can be part of a Squadron, and those are all ships that need to be built by a shipyard. They have no control over it regarding selling, buying, ordering, scrapping, re-appointing, etc.īut you ask: " Does this mean that if an unrated Captain joins a squadron, a sloop magically comes into existence for him/her?" No, Squadrons are part of the rated navy, it has no Sloop class ships. The unrated fleet is also not a group of ships the Navy can do anything with. So this is not a way in which cheap ships enter the market. These ships are also exclusive to Navy use, they will not be sold on the market. That (fictitious) shipyard produces only Sloop sized ships, on demand. Their origin will be from a government shipyard in the capital port, which isn't a business that can be owned (or visited). So the Sloop you get might have been around for a while, and had many Captains, if lucky enough not to be destroyed or neglected to a point where it falls apart. And if there are too many, then they sit in wait. That means that they are re-used for other Captains if there is a surplus. They will have a unique name, and once they are generated, they will lead the unique life any ship does. I can't deny there is not a magical element to this. There are as many of such ships as there are Navy Captains for them. So they don't need to start at the bottom again as Navy has an 'unrated fleet', and those are ships of Sloop size. If they make such a mover, they get straight into that foreign Navy with their already developed rank. If a Captain is really eager to get promotion, but in their nation the competition is fierce, they can try and move to a smaller nation where commander are more needed. So if the Captain made it all the way up to being able to sail a 3rd Rate Ship, that remains, if the Captain made it to become an Admiral, that rank remains, so they can be promoted back straight into a former high position.Īlso, the Navy rank can be transported to other nations. It is important to note that a Navy Officer might lose their Commission, but never their rank. Of course the more experienced Captains might be promoted back quickly. Losing that Commission might mean the Captain has to start all over again. Getting a Rated Commission might be a matter of hard work and patience. But if the Captain didn't impress that much and there is other talent waiting, it might be a long time before a Captain gets a good ship again. Now imagine the Navy replaces the lost ship in that Squadron, and the Squadron was very attached to their former Captain, they might assign a rated ship to that Captain again soon. And the Captain has to wait once again for a Rated Commission. The Captain has a right to claim a Sloop class ship, those are always available. So now the Captain is back in the 'Unrated Navy'. If a Captain loses his rated ship, then he/she also loses the place in the Squadron. That can be because a previous Captain has quit or has been promoted elsewhere, that can also be because the Admiralty decided to add a new ship to the Squadron. A Captain is given a commission in a Squadron if a ship in a Squadron is available. Each Squadron of the Navy has a number of ships, these are the 'rated ships'.
